What Is Your Board Not Seeing

The Board Diversity Index 2026 provides an interesting snapshot of Australia's boardrooms. Progress continues in gender representation, with women now holding 38% of ASX300 board seats. Yet representation from culturally diverse backgrounds has declined, Indigenous participation remains limited, and there is still little visible representation of people with disability or the LGBTQ+ community.

What stood out for me was not the diversity statistics themselves, but what they tell us about board capability. Most boards periodically review their composition. Fewer take the time to rigorously examine where their blind spots may exist. What perspectives are absent when strategic opportunities, emerging risks or customer expectations are discussed?

The most significant board risk is what they collectively can’t see because everyone around the table see the world the same way.

The strongest boards are those willing to periodically step back, examine themselves honestly and ask whether their current composition reflects the markets, workforce and communities it serves.

How Bluestone Can Help

Our Board Skills Matrix Development and Independent Review process is designed to support exactly this discussion.

We work with boards to move beyond a simple inventory of qualifications and experience. Together, we explore the capabilities needed over the next three to five years, assess where gaps may exist, and identify the perspectives that could strengthen board performance.

We create a space for conversations that many boards know they need to have but often struggle to initiate.
